What happens
when God begins to break
what you rely on most?
Not gently—
but completely.
God’s judgment is not random—
it is targeted at what we trust more than Him.
Exodus 9 records the fifth, sixth, and seventh plagues—livestock disease, boils, and the devastating hail mixed with fire. These plagues mark a turning point in the Exodus narrative, as the judgment intensifies and begins to affect human life directly. The hailstorm, described as unlike anything Egypt had ever seen, demonstrates God’s power over nature and His authority over life, death, and false security. This chapter reveals that God’s judgment is purposeful: it exposes false trust, confronts hardened hearts, and calls for a response before it is too late.

📖 What Is Exodus 9 About?
Exodus 9 shows escalation.
The plagues are no longer symbolic.
They become:
👉 destructive
👉 personal
👉 unavoidable
First—livestock die
Egypt’s economy is struck.
- animals collapse
- resources disappear
But Israel is untouched.
👉 A clear distinction begins
Then—boils
Now it reaches the body.
- pain
- suffering
- no escape
Even the magicians cannot stand.
Finally—hail and fire
This is the turning point.
👉 hail falls
👉 lightning (fire) flashes within it
👉 destruction covers the land
The Bible describes it as:
👉 the most severe storm Egypt had ever seen
Everything in the field is struck:
- people
- animals
- crops
- trees
👉 This is the first plague where death becomes widespread
But something critical happens.
God had warned them:
👉 “Bring everything inside”
Some listened.
Some did not.
👉 Those who listened were spared
👉 Those who ignored were destroyed
👉 This leads directly into Exodus 10,
where judgment continues and becomes even more severe.
🧩 Key Structure of Exodus 9
Exodus 9 unfolds in three escalating movements:
1. What You Depend On Is Struck (Verses 1–7)
Livestock represent:
- wealth
- stability
- livelihood
God strikes it.
👉 This is not random
👉 It is targeted
2. What You Cannot Control Is Exposed (Verses 8–12)
Boils affect the body itself.
- no defense
- no remedy
Even spiritual leaders (magicians) collapse.
👉 Human ability is exposed as powerless
3. What You Ignore Will Eventually Break You (Verses 13–35)
God gives warning:
👉 “Take shelter”
This is mercy before judgment.
Then comes hail and fire.
- extreme
- unnatural
- unstoppable
👉 hail and lightning occur together, emphasizing a supernatural act of judgment
Pharaoh responds:
👉 “I have sinned”
But only temporarily.
When relief comes—
👉 he hardens again
👉 This reveals the core issue:
Not lack of evidence—
but refusal to change.
👉 This movement leads directly into Exodus 10,
where repetition continues until the final judgment.
🧠 What This Reveals About God
Exodus 9 reveals three critical truths.
1. God’s Judgment Is Targeted
Each plague hits something specific.
- economy
- body
- environment
👉 God confronts what people rely on
2. God Gives Warning Before Judgment
This is important.
👉 God speaks before He strikes
Those who listened were spared.
👉 Judgment is never without warning
3. God Distinguishes Between People
Israel is protected.
Egypt is struck.
👉 This is not chaos
👉 This is intentional separation
🔥 Why This Chapter Matters Today
We often think:
“Judgment is random.”
But Exodus 9 shows:
👉 it is precise
What we trust in:
- money
- health
- systems
Can all be shaken.
And when they are—
👉 what remains is revealed
We also ignore warnings.
We delay.
We assume:
👉 “There is still time”
But Exodus 9 shows:
👉 delay does not stop what is coming
👉 This continues in Exodus 10,
where repeated warnings reveal God’s purpose for future generations.
🙏 Meditation
God is not just acting.
He is revealing.
What you trust.
What you ignore.
What you refuse to change.
Because sometimes—
God does not begin with destruction.
He begins with warning.
So the question is:
👉 Are you listening now—
or waiting until everything breaks?
