Genesis 15 reveals God establishing His covenant with Abram, promising countless descendants and confirming the promise through a solemn covenant ceremony.
Genesis 15 records the moment when God formally establishes His covenant with Abram and reveals how righteousness comes through faith. After Abram’s victory in the war of Genesis 14, God appears to him in a vision, speaking words of reassurance: “Do not be afraid, Abram. I am your shield, your very great reward.” Abram’s deepest concern, however, remains unanswered—he still has no child. In response, God promises descendants as numerous as the stars, and Abram believes the Lord. Scripture then declares one of the most foundational truths of the Bible: Abram’s faith is counted to him as righteousness.
The Fear That Wealth Could Not Solve
In the ancient world, descendants meant security, strength, and future. Abram did not hide his concern before God. Even if he gained riches, what value could they hold without an heir? A servant, Eliezer of Damascus, seemed destined to inherit everything. God responded clearly and decisively:
“A son who comes from your own body shall be your heir.”
This promise addressed not Abram’s possessions, but his deepest fear.

Faith That Looks Beyond Fear
God then led Abram outside and lifted his eyes to the night sky.
“Look toward heaven and count the stars… so shall your offspring be.”
God did not only speak—He allowed Abram to see. Scripture records a defining moment: Abram believed the LORD, and it was counted to him as righteousness. Faith was born not from certainty, but from trust in God’s promise.

A Covenant God Alone Would Fulfill
Abram then asked how he could know that the land would truly belong to him. God answered through a covenant ceremony. Animals were divided, as was customary in ancient covenants, symbolizing a life-binding oath. But something astonishing happened: Abram fell into a deep sleep, and only God—appearing as a smoking firepot and a flaming torch—passed between the pieces.
This declared that the covenant depended not on Abram’s faithfulness, but on God’s.
A Promise That Spans History
God revealed the future: generations of suffering, deliverance, judgment, and return. The covenant extended far beyond Abram’s lifetime, unfolding into the history of redemption itself. God showed that His promises may take time, but they never fail.

God Is Our Shield and Our Reward
Genesis 15 proclaims a powerful truth: God comes first to the fearful. He gives vision, bears responsibility, and completes what He promises. The true reward is not material blessing, but God Himself.
As Abram looked to the stars, so are we called to lift our eyes beyond fear and trust the God who keeps covenant.
To those who believe, God is our shield, and God is our reward. Amen.
