Exodus 12 – Remove the Leaven | Unleavened Bread Meditation

God saved you.
But—
what must you remove next?

Salvation is not only about being delivered—
it is about removing what still remains.

Exodus 12 records the Passover—the moment of Israel’s deliverance from Egypt—and the command to remove leaven through the Feast of Unleavened Bread. This chapter reveals both God’s power to save and His call to holiness. The unleavened bread was not only a practical necessity for a hurried escape, but also a lasting symbol of purity, separation, and transformation. It shows that redemption is not the end of the story—it is the beginning of a new life.

📖 What Is Exodus 12 About?

Exodus 12 marks the final night in Egypt.

God gives instructions:

  • A lamb must be sacrificed
  • Its blood placed on the doorposts
  • The people must eat in readiness

That night—

  • Judgment falls on Egypt
  • Death passes over Israel

👉 This is where the word “Passover” comes from

God distinguishes:

  • Those under the blood
  • Those outside it

But that is not all.

God gives another command:

👉 Remove all leaven from your houses

For seven days—

👉 eat only unleavened bread

Why?

Because they were leaving Egypt in haste—
there was no time for bread to rise

But this command is deeper than history.

👉 It becomes a permanent reminder

  • of deliverance
  • of separation
  • of a new life

👉 This moment continues into Exodus 13,
where God defines the identity of the redeemed.

🧩 Key Structure of Exodus 12

Exodus 12 unfolds in three powerful movements:

1. The Blood of the Lamb — Salvation (Verses 1–13)

God provides a way of escape.

  • A lamb must die
  • Blood must be applied
  • The house must be covered

👉 Salvation is not earned
👉 It is received through what God provides

This moment becomes:

👉 the foundation of all redemption

2. The Removal of Leaven — Purity (Verses 14–20)

God commands:

👉 Remove all leaven

Why?

  • It reminds them of urgency
  • It symbolizes cleansing

Leaven spreads.

👉 Even a small amount changes everything

So God teaches:

👉 What spreads must be removed

👉 Unleavened bread becomes a symbol of purity and separation from corruption

3. The Exodus — A New Beginning (Verses 21–42)

After the judgment—

everything changes.

  • Egypt urges them to leave
  • They depart immediately
  • They carry unleavened dough

👉 Redemption leads to movement

They cannot stay where they were.

👉 Salvation always creates a new direction

👉 This deliverance leads directly into Exodus 13,
where God defines identity and begins to lead His people.

🧠 What This Reveals About God

Exodus 12 reveals who God is.

1. God Provides the Way of Salvation

The people did not create the solution.

God did.

👉 The lamb
👉 The blood
👉 The instruction

All came from Him.

2. God Separates What He Saves

God does not just rescue—

👉 He distinguishes

Those under the blood are protected.

Those outside are not.

3. God Calls for a New Life After Salvation

Removing leaven is not optional.

👉 It is commanded

Why?

Because:

👉 salvation changes how you live

🔥 Why This Chapter Matters Today

Many people think:

“Being saved is enough.”

But Exodus 12 shows:

👉 Salvation is the beginning

After salvation comes:

  • removal
  • cleansing
  • separation

Leaven represents something deeper.

👉 What spreads inside you

  • habits
  • compromise
  • hidden sin

Even a little—

👉 changes everything

👉 This journey continues in Exodus 13,
where God shows that the redeemed now belong to Him and must follow His leading.

🙏 Meditation

The blood was applied.

You were saved.

But now—

what still remains inside?

What have you not removed?

Because salvation is not only:

👉 being brought out

It is also:

👉 being made new

So the question is:

👉 What must you remove
to fully live in what God has done?
