This post is a written summary of the meditation video on Genesis 1:26–2:17.
Where does human life truly begin?
What sustains our lives, and what kind of life were we created to live?
Scripture speaks of life beginning not merely as breath or activity, but as a seed.
In this meditation, we begin with Genesis and move through the testimony of the Gospel of John and the Johannine letters, reflecting on what it means to live a life reborn by God’s seed—the Word.
What Is God’s Seed?
First John 3:9 declares,
“No one born of God makes a practice of sinning, for God’s seed abides in him.”
What is this seed of God?
The Gospel of John answers clearly:
“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.”
God’s seed is Jesus Christ Himself—the Word of God.
To receive Jesus is not merely to accept religious knowledge, but to have the very life of the Word planted within us. When God’s seed abides in a person, that life can no longer remain unchanged. A new kind of existence begins.
Life That Begins as a Seed Is Still Growing
A life born from a seed does not appear fully formed.
Just as a child in the womb is truly alive yet not complete, so those who are reborn by the seed of the Word are still being shaped.
Because God’s Word is alive within us, we are still being formed, still being created. New birth is not the end of the journey—it is the beginning.
The Authority Given to Those Who Receive the Word
John 1:12–13 proclaims,
“To all who did receive Him, who believed in His name, He gave the right to become children of God.”
This “authority” is not simply power, but a transformation of identity.
Those who receive the Word are born not of human will or lineage, but of God Himself. When the Word is received, the Holy Spirit comes to dwell within, enabling us to understand the Word and live according to it.
Genesis 1 and the Purpose of Human Creation
Genesis chapter 1 reveals why humanity was created.
God first formed light, space, time, and environment—and only then did He create human beings. This shows that humanity stands at the center and climax of creation.
Human beings were created in the image of God. This image is not about outward appearance, but about character and way of life. Jesus Himself is the perfect image of God, and humanity was created to reflect Christ and to live on earth as God’s representatives. That life begins by receiving the seed of the Word.
The Shattered Image and the New Seed
In Genesis chapter 3, humanity falls into sin.
The image of God is damaged, and human beings become enslaved to sin. Fruitfulness and dominion are no longer pure blessings.
Therefore, God sends a new seed—Jesus Christ.
“That which is born of the Spirit is spirit… You must be born again.”
New life comes through the Holy Spirit, through the seed of the Word.
Human Beings Are Creatures Who Grow by Seed
Genesis 1:29–30 shows that both humans and animals receive food from God, yet humans are given seed-bearing plants. This distinction reveals something profound: human beings are creatures designed to grow by seed, by the Word.
Only those who eat the Word can bear the Word and raise others through it.
Life, Covenant, and the New Commandment
In Genesis 2, God breathes the breath of life into humanity alone, making human beings spiritual and covenantal creatures. Separation from God results in death, because life itself depends on Him.
Though humanity broke the first covenant, God established a new covenant through Jesus Christ. The command of this covenant is simple yet profound:
“Love one another, as I have loved you.”
This Christlike love defines the people of the new covenant and shapes their mission—to make disciples, to teach the Word, and to live lives formed by it.
A Life That Multiplies by the Seed of the Word
Those who have received Jesus, God’s seed, are called to live lives that eat the Word, keep the Word, and sow the Word. Salvation begins with the individual, but it never ends there. Life always multiplies.
May the Lord plant the seed of His Word in our hearts each day, and may our lives, families, and churches be filled with its life-giving power. Amen.
